Sheffield United met Celtic in the unofficial Championship of Great Britain over two games in 1898, United won 1-0 at home on 12th March, and in Glasgow on 16th April, equalized in the last minute, so winning 2-1 on Aggregate.


Jimmy Dunne`s record of scoring 30 or more goals in three successive seasons in top flight stood for over sixty years until 1995-96.


United`s most capped player was Billy Gillespie, 25, for Northern Ireland


Joe Shaw made a record 629 Appearances for Sheffield United, between 1948-66



A Bruce Springsteen concert was held at Bramall Lane in July 1988.


In the Sheffield Blitz in 1940, Bramall Lane was bombed, the John Street Stand was badly damaged.


Harry Johnson scored 205 goals between 1919-30.


United, over history, are best team in Sheffield having beaten Wednesday more times in competitive games. The record is:

United have had 34 players capped by England. The last was Brian Deane against Spain. The most capped United player for England was Ernest "Nudger" Needham who won 16 caps, whilst playing for the Blades. However, the international record is held by Billy Gillespie who, whilst a United player, won 25 caps for Ireland.


United have been given a national and international audience, with a BBC TV programme entitled "United" in 1990 and a film, "When Saturday Comes" starring Sean Bean, Pete Postlethwaite and Emily Lloyd in 1996. United also get numerous mentions in the hit film "The Full Monty" and Robert Carlyle is seen wearing a United shirt.


United played in the first ever Charity Shield match in 1898 against Corinthians. Bizarrely, as the first match was drawn, as was the second, the teams ended up sharing the Shield as United refused to play extra-time in protest at some refereeing decisions!


The FA Cup Final of 1915 (which United won 3-0 against Chelsea) was the only FA Cup Final to take place during a World War. Also this match produced the highest amount raised for a programme at auction, reaching £11,500!



United possibly hold the record for the most number of corner kicks in a match. Against West Ham United in 1989 the Blades clocked up 28 - amazingly United failed to score from any of them and lost 2-0!


Bramall Lane was the venue of the first ever football match played under floodlights when 20,000 people packed the ground on 14th October 1878.


Sheffield Wednesday played at Bramall Lane before United were even formed. But they failed to make it their home, favouring Owlerton and then Hillsborough.


The United striker Brian Deane became the first ever player to score in the new Premier League in 1992, against Manchester United. The Blades went on to win 2-1.
